CRHRA Helps 155 Local Job Seekers

The Public Relations and Workforce Readiness Committees once again partnered to support area job seekers at the January 16, 2012 Times Union Job Fair. The Committees, along with other volunteers from CRHRA and CRRN provided free resume critiques to over 150 job seekers. Volunteers included Bev Knapp, Robert Braath, Martin Patrick, Jennifer Stonehouse, Erin Gordon, Tom McKenna, Alison Rosenblum, Max Rausch, Renee Mesh, Harry Hayes, Susan Lundberg, Jim Amanatides, Nicole Keck, Tracy Smith, Rebecca Rockwell, David Cheng, Jennifer LaPorte, Amy Sylvester, Allyson Cimino, Marj Adams, and Debra Antonelli.

CRHRA is committed to helping individuals who are entering or re-entering the workforce. Local job fairs are an opportunity for CRHRA members to volunteer some of their time by helping those seeking to improve their visibility with employers.

We will be providing these services again on April 2, 2012 from 10am – 4pm at the Times Union Job Fair at the Albany Marriott. If you are an active member of CRHRA and interested in volunteering for the next job fair please email pr@crhra.com or workforce@crhra.org.

2011 Executive Panel: Challenges on the Road to Economic Recovery

The Capital Region Human Resources Association (CRHRA) will hold its annual Executive Panel on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at the Holiday Inn Turf on Wolf Road in Albany. Most economists agree that the Great Recession has ended and the United States has entered a period of economic recovery. Although this is welcome news to employers, the economic recovery creates a new set of challenges for Human Resource professionals. Join us for one of our most popular programs of the year, as we hear from three local executives as to how they plan to strategize with HR to address these challenges. CRHRA is pleased to welcome this year’s three panelists: Jerel Golub, President and COO of Price Chopper Supermarkets, Dr. Dorothy Cucinelli, Executive Director of ClearView Center, and David Klein, President of CG Power Solutions USA Inc. CRHRA Presents: Introduction to Lean Six Sigma for Human Resources Professionals

The Capital Region Human Resource Association (CRHRA) will hold the next Monthly Meeting and Program on Wednesday, November 10, 2010.

Human Resource Departments continually look at how they can get things done more efficiently. You’ve probably heard about Lean Six Sigma with respect to manufacturing and wonder, what can it do for my Human Resources Department? Our November meeting will answer this question and give you an introduction as to how you can apply it to your processes.

This presentation is designed as an introduction to Lean Six Sigma for Human Resource professionals. Attendees will come away from this presentation with a conceptual understanding of Lean Six Sigma and real world examples of how it can be applied to Human Resource processes.

Our speaker, David Duda, is a Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Black Belt at the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO). He joined the NYISO in 2008 and is responsible for facilitation of LSS training, leading continuous improvement efforts, mentoring of LSS practitioners and serving as an internal consultant to the organization. Prior to joining the NYISO, David worked as a Six Sigma Black Belt at Delta Air Lines’ technical operations facility in Atlanta, GA. While with Delta, David began his Six Sigma training in 1998 and received his Black Belt certification in 2001.

Union Graduate College is hosting a national conference on August 2, 2010 entitled:

Women, Management and Leadership: Organizational Practices and Individual Strategies for Women

This conference will bridge research with organizational practice in the area of women and leadership. Presentations will be given by scholars, advocates, attorneys and management consultants throughout the United States. Presentations will be given on the following topics: work/life balance, glass ceiling, women legislative leaders, mentoring, women leaders in medicine and health, women's government network and women in management.

In addition, local companies will discuss their own diversity programs for recruiting, hiring and promoting women leaders and managers.

Two keynote addresses will also be included in the conference. Pat Mitchell, President and CEO of the Paley Center for Media and Karen Gross, President of Southern Vermont College.

This conference is part of Union Graduate College’s commitment to educating graduate students and community members with the “skill and vision to lead.”

The HR Certification Institute has approved this conference for 2.5 general credit hours.

All Aboard! Please join us on Thursday, June 10, 2010, for a night of fun and celebration aboard the Captain JP Morgan Cruise Line. We will be honoring our hardworking volunteers, who service CRHRA’s thirteen committees and whose continuing commitment to CRHRA is directly responsible for our chapter’s success. Their work enables CRHRA to carry out its mission of “serving the professional and advancing the profession” by assisting members attain certification, offering educational programming, assisting individuals who are entering and/or re-entering the workforce, promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace, keeping our members informed through our newsletter, website, and social networking sites and promoting CRHRA through public relation and marketing.

Boarding time is 6:00 pm and the Captain JP sets sail at 6:30 pm, returning at 9:00 pm. After the annual business meeting and installment of the new board, the rest of the evening is reserved for light food, networking and plenty of fun. There will be a D.J. on board and a cash bar will be available all night. The price for this night of fun is $30 for members and guests. One of our strategic missions of our organization is to improve our market awareness and to be a resource to the community on information related to human resources. The Public Relations Committee is pleased to announce that we have been invited to be a part of a soon-to-be-talked about survey delivering factual, real time information on hiring and issues facing employers and job seekers.

WRGB CBS 6 is starting a new segment that will focus on the ‘big picture’ in local business and industry. The focus isn’t only to tell people about layoffs and closings at one location but as well, about the bright spots - companies that are bringing back jobs that had previously been eliminated or growing.

CRHRA is asking that we include you and your organization in the “Jerry’s Job Hunt - Employment Index” driven by CBS6 anchor Jerry Gretzinger. Jerry is working with CRHRA member Dan Moran of Next-Act to deploy an anonymous, simple, one page survey that will be distributed monthly to assess local employment trends. It shouldn’t require more than a few minutes to complete it. For you convenience, it will be delivered and returned via email.

The information we receive will help to paint an accurate picture of employment in the Capital Region. We believe this will be an important service for the community, as well as employers like you. CBS6 may be able to feature your company as well and share your good news.

Albany, NY - The Capital Region Human Resources Association (CRHRA) will hold the next Monthly Meeting and Program on Thursday, February 11, 2010.

It is without question that employers need affordable health care options for employees. With the recent passage in the House and Senate of bills to overhaul the country’s health care system, the employer community anxiously awaits to see whether the compromise bill will deliver on the promise to provide relief from ever-increasing health care costs. Notwithstanding the work that is taking place at our nation’s Capital, employers are asking what they can do now to reduce costs and improve employee’s health.

Join us for breakfast on February 11, 2010, when Kristie L. Robertson, Director of Worksite Health Initiatives at the American Cancer Society will conduct an interactive presentation on workplace wellness and prevention program options, including their effectiveness and return on investment. There is a general consensus that investments in employer-sponsored wellness programs reduce overall health care costs for employers and employees and generate savings for the nation’s health care system as a whole. Come learn what other local organizations are doing and what preventative health care measures your organization can adopt to improve workers’ health and drive down health care costs.

The Capital Region Human Resources Association (CRHRA) will hold the next Monthly Meeting and Program on Wednesday, January 13, 2010.

CRHRA will kick-off 2010 with an HRCI approved dinner program and presentation titled Leveraging Human Capital During Difficult Times. The recession that has battered the U.S. economy over the past year has had a tremendous impact on New York businesses, its nonprofit sector and the State government. Join us for one of our most popular programs of the year, as we hear from three local leaders as to how they partnered with HR during the economic downturn to leverage their most valuable resource – human capital. This year’s three panelist include: James Reed, MD, President and CEO of Northeast Health; Raymond Schimmer, Executive Director of Parsons Child and Family Center; and Carol Ash, Commissioner of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Diversity Achievement Award

Capital Region Human Resource Association (CRHRA) announces the call for nominations for the third annual Top Five Spectrum Award. The award will recognize the “Top Five” Capital District employers for their creative and innovative strategies that promote and advance the concept and spirit of diversity.

Nominations will be considered in the following categories: large employer (500 employees or more); mid-size employer (100 to 499 employees); small employer (fewer than 100 employees); non-profit employer; government / private (non-public) employer. Nominations will be based upon the completion of a nomination application that was developed for CRHRA by the College of St. Rose. To assure objectivity, the College of St. Rose will review all nominations and make the final selections.

CRHRA Business Meeting and Volunteer Recognition

Join us on Thursday night June 18th at the Holiday Inn Albany on Wolf Road for a celebration of our volunteers and their continuing commitment to helping our chapter “serve the profession and advance the professional”. Our wonderful volunteers provide hours support to the various CRHRA committees. Because of their dedication CRHRA is able to maintain and continuously improve the website, provide meaningful and insightful programming for meetings and conferences, provide chapter members with information through our newsletter, facebook, linkedin and other social networking sites and keep us in the public’s eye through public relation and marketing.

Our theme this year is to celebrate our “stars”. We are going to make everyone a star with a fun evening of KARAOKE! Who doesn’t love Karaoke? After the annual business meeting and installment of the new board we will cut loose with hors d’oeuvres, drinks and fun, fun, fun.

Our volunteers are our guests for this fun-filled and what surely will turn out to be an event-filled evening. Who knows maybe we have a star in the making in our midst. Cost for non-volunteers is $25 for members, $32 for guests and students are $10. A cash bar will be available for the length of the meeting.

This month’s program is a morning session offering two programs concentrating on the business of recruitment. The first program titled “Steal Willingly – Credit Openly: The Tool Kit of a Lone Recruiter” will provide you with a tool kit that guides you to essential value added items within the recruiting process, creates ease of use access to contacts and moves time to candidate facing tactics. The second program titled “Build or Buy: The Business Case for Internally Building or Outsourcing Recruitment” will escort you through the development of a business case for your situation; data gathering, analysis and stakeholder buy-in. FINDING A JOB DURING THE RECESSION

Few people relish the idea of looking for a job. It can be a humiliating and humbling experience, especially in a poor economy like the one we are now going through. Even within difficult times such as these, some people are finding jobs. They don’t have secrets; they are just using tried and true methods that have proved successful in good times and in bad.

You can find your next job with professional tips. Follow these techniques to shorten your current search.

1. Your Health: First, and this is important, keep yourself healthy. That means eating the right foods, setting up a regular exercise program and feeding the mind daily with upbeat music, perhaps a motivational movie or reading positive material - just doing something daily to maintain your spirits. Keeping yourself healthy will also reap positive interviews and improve your ability to network.

2. Top Notch Resume: Of course you will need a top notch resume. The resume should identify not only job responsibilities, but should stress your accomplishments – those areas that have shown how you have made the company better because of how well you did your former job.

3. Review the Classifieds: Although advertising revenues continue to go down in newspapers, don’t forget to review the classifieds in your daily and Sunday newspaper. In addition to sending your resume, make sure your cover letter or email explains why you want that particular job. Each correspondence should be specifically written to address that particular job and that company.

4. Utilize Recruiters: Don’t forget the recruiters. Most people call 2 or 3 recruiters and wait for the phone to ring. In the Capital Region there are over 50 employment agencies. Why not increase your chances by contacting 10, 20 or more?

5. Internet Job Boards: Of course everyone knows that the internet lists hundreds of thousands of jobs. But how many do you visit, or are you just using the two or three that your are familiar with? Like recruiters, you increase your chances by searching multiple website each day. Using the internet also means visiting specific companys’ websites because an organization may first list its openings to attract people who are motivated to work in their company.

6. Networking: Make sure to ration your time. Don’t spend all your time on the internet. Research has shown that over 50% of the job seekers found their job through networking. Some books estimate that the real number may be closer to 75%. Networking is not calling a company to see if they have a job opening. Networking is making a list of everyone you know and calling to ask them for 2 or 3 other people to call. There will be individuals on your network tree that will be aware of openings.

Our research shows that the typical unemployed worker takes 121 days to find a new job – in good times. The average job seeker spends 3-5 hours per week looking for a new position. We teach our job seekers that if you are not putting in 3-5 hours per day at a minimum, you’re not doing an adequate job.

Your job search may still be frustrating but by following these guidelines you will shorten your unemployed days.

The conference includes a full day with HR vendors and HR subject matter experts presenting on various Human Resource related topics and issues. The morning keynote speakers are New York State’s Comptroller, Mr. Thomas Dinapoli and Susan Post, Eastern Regional SHRM Director. Mr. Dinapoli will discuss views of how the New York State economy is affecting businesses throughout the state, both short and long term and Ms. Post will discuss ethical issues in HR. Human Resource Association Supports Unemployed Members with Voucher System

As this economy continues to slow and many of our colleagues are losing jobs, it is critical for local professionals to continue networking to maintain connections and seek new job opportunities. One local professional chapter is helping its unemployed members to maintain their professional connections without any additional financial hardship. The Capital Region Human Resource Association (CRHRA) has established a confidential Voucher System to assist members in career transition with their job search and development. To ensure that members can continue to connect with their colleagues, CRHRA offers an opportunity for active members who are currently unemployed to continue attending up to two meetings (per year) at no cost to them The average cost per meeting is $30.
